Days for Girls Project
Loving the idea of Days for Girls, and having some money left to us to be used for the benefit of young women, we set about arranging sewing classes among women in Belfast, Newtownards and Ballymena. We didn’t realise just how big a task we had taken on, but we set out to make 300 kits. Everything had to spell out QUALITY, nothing half-hearted was good enough, and it took several weeks to make up the kits, and pack them to take with us on the flights. Each kit included a drawstring colourful bag, 2 shields, 8 liners, 2 ziplock plastic bags, 2 pair of underwear ,a bar of soap and a facecloth. Each kit was made with pride and with love. It was amazing watching groups of women – all ages – get together and work as a team.
I don’t think we really expected or understood the impact these kits would have on the girls in Tharaka, but it was amazing watching their reaction when presented with the kits. The young girls in the our group talked about Myths and Truths, Value of Women, How to look after kits and they demonstrated how to use them. It was such a brilliant project, and the feedback we have had following our trip makes all the hard work worthwhile.
